“Good listeners, like precious gems, are to be treasured.” -Unknown
Welcome back to our deep dive into the world of birthstones and their origins. This is our final chapter in this series as we close out the year with the birthstone of those born in the month of December, Tanzanite!
Origins
Originating not that long ago in the mountains of Tanzania, Tanzanite as we know it has been around for only the past 70 years or so. Being discovered not too far off from Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzanite was originally thought to be a unique version of sapphire. It was later deemed too different, and was given its own name based on its country of origin.
One of a Kind
Only a few years after its discovery in 1970 the brains behind Tiffany & Co. found the stunning gemstone, and created a campaign that would bring the luxurious gem from a far off country to a household name in only a few short years. It didn’t take long for the stone to capture the hearts of those around the world for its rarity and one of a kind hue.

Popularity
In the jewelry industry there is often thought to be, “The big 4” which consists of: diamond, ruby, emerald, and sapphire. Those are the stones that everyone around the world can identify. Tanzanite is often credited as the most popular gemstone on the market, right behind those previously listed, which is no small feat.
Mystical Abilities
Many believe that Tanzanite has the ability to banish negative thoughts from the owner's life, and helps them be less influenced by outside opinions. It also changes hue based on the lighting around it, and this is thought to change the wearer’s consciousness.
Tanzanite is a very unique gemstone and has even more unique properties. It is no wonder why it is the gemstone of those born in the month of December. A stunning stone that will be the focal point of any piece it is placed in!
