“Life keeps throwing me stones. And I keep finding the diamonds.” – Ana Claudia Antunes
Welcome back to our month long #DiamondDeepDive where we break down the history, pros, and cons to the different types of diamonds or stones used most frequently in engagement and wedding rings.
In our final week we are going back to the beginning and talking about Diamonds once more. This time, however, we are not talking about mined diamonds from the Earth, but instead diamonds grown in a Lab.
Curious or confused? Keep reading below!
What is a Lab Grown Diamond?
A Lab Grown Diamond (or sometimes called a Synthetic Diamond) is just that, a diamond made in a lab instead of under Earth’s surface.
The same principles of massive pressure & time apply here, they are just sped up. A Lab Grown Diamond is a manmade stone that is nearly identical to a diamond from the Earth.
With Lab Grown Diamonds booming in popularity in the past few years we get many different questions about them, but by far the most common question is about the differences between these and a diamond from the Earth.
Well the good news is that there aren't any differences between the two stones that you’re able to see with the naked eye.
When we say the differences between the two gemstones are so microscopic you need specialized machinery to see them, we are not kidding!
There’s a common misconception that a Lab Grown Diamond is a knockoff stone, but that can't be farther from the truth. A Lab Grown Diamond is a true Diamond through and through.
The only difference is that it was made in a controlled environment, and in a fraction of the time it takes naturally!

Pros of Lab Grown Diamonds
- Price: Simply put, because we are able to speed up the natural process of creating these diamonds, the supply of them is immense and thus, the price is significantly cheaper than a diamond that was mined from the Earth!
- Supply: As stated above, the supply of Lab Grown Diamonds is larger than those mined from the Earth, so finding a specific shape or size diamond is easier for the consumer!
Cons of Lab Grown Diamonds
- Natural Identity: As we spoke in the Earth Mined Diamond blog, for some people a natural diamond from under the Earth’s surface is the only way to go!
