“You’re a diamond dear, they can’t break you.” -Unknown
As the years have gone by we’ve heard it all. Will this diamond fall out? Can this be replaced or fixed? Should we insure our jewelry?
All these years later, however, and no one has asked the question, “Can a diamond chip or break like other stones?” While most people believe that diamonds are the strongest gemstone around, they also assume that diamonds are unbreakable.
Well just how unbreakable are they? Find out below because the answer might surprise you!
Diamonds are not indestructible. They are one of the strongest gemstones, being about 58 times stronger than corundum, one of the other strongest minerals on earth, but they are still susceptible to damage.
The most fragile place on a diamond is going to be it’s girdles, or its edges. That is why most rings hace prongs that try to cover most of the diamond's edges, to protect them from chipping.
Now not all diamonds are created equally, and we are talking about shape. Some diamond shapes such as: Princess, Radiant, and Emeralds are more prone to chipping being that they have hard corners and sharper edges overall.
Choosing a diamond shape that has less sharp corners, and a prong setting like bezels will protect the diamond the most.
Just because a diamond CAN chip, doesn’t mean it’s GOING to chip. While we cannot be certain if a diamond will chip or not, we generally recommend you take your ring off during any type of activity where it could fall off or possibly hit a hard object.
A lot of us wear our rings on a daily basis, so we should be aware of the warning signs you might want to get your ring checked out.
Always make sure the prongs appear to be covering the edges of the diamond and holding it in place. Additionally, make sure your ring is sized correctly so it cannot simply fall off and get damaged.
If you ever are unsure if your prongs are solid, your ring is sized correctly, or if there is any damage to your diamond don’t hesitate to stop by our showroom & we’d be happy to check it out for you!
